Young Female Activists for Intercultural Dialogue

Young Female Activists for Intercultural Dialogue is a Creative Force project funded by the Swedish Institute, and implemented by SwIdeas AB in Sweden and East and West Centre for Sustainable Development in Jordan (WEE Centre). The Swedish Institute’s Creative Force programme emphasizes the importance of culture and creativity for a country’s development, for strengthening democracy and for the right to express oneself freely. The aim is to help build respect for human rights, with particular focus on freedom of expression and women’s rights.

Feminist action is a driving force for enhancing women’s rights, fighting for gender equality and freedom of speech. Unequal power dynamics and patriarchal structures oppress women globally, limiting the tools and safe spaces available for female activists to create change and fight for their rights of expression. In Jordan, feminist terminology and words are not always directly translatable into Arabic and local female political activists experience limitations to their rights as women to express their ideas and their identity. In this project, we aim to promote intercultural dialogue and exchange of good practices between Jordanian and Swedish-based female political activists, using the arts, visual media tools such as storytelling to uncover gender-based oppression.
